Announcing the PropTech Power List - Company Edition
The 50 most valuable PRIVATE PropTech companies in the world
I get asked all the time about my favorite PropTech companies. Because I’m lazy, I’d like to have somewhere to send all these requests.
Kidding aside, I do think there is some value to having a concrete way to rank the most valuable private companies in PropTech. Knowing who the most influential startups are and watching as they are on the cusp of an IPO or large exit will help us all better understand the late-stage trajectory of our sector.
Whether you’re a journalist covering PropTech, event organizer looking for speakers, IBanker looking for clients, acquirer looking for an acquisition, or simply an employee trying to weigh your PropTech options, this should serve as a starting point for your list of contacts.
A couple notes before we dig into the list:
The best way I know to rank companies is by valuation. Yeah, it’s imperfect. Yes, VCs get overzealous. But it would be nonsense to think I could come up with a more accurate measure of company health when VCs (and the founders) have actual, you know, data. So, while it’s imperfect, it’s probably the best we’ve got.
Along those lines, valuations tend to clump around round numbers - $100M, $500M, $1B, $1.5B, etc. So I need a way to break ties. I chose revenue. Those are not usually public numbers so we will have to estimate and chat behind closed doors. Still, every other metric is worse and more subjective. So, for now, it’s revenue for tiebreakers.
Along THAT line, assume that all of the information I share is public OR I have permission from the company to share it.
Relatedly, I can’t imagine a scenario where valuation is a long-term competitive advantage. Therefore, I can’t see why someone would want to keep that confidential (especially at the hundreds-of-millions or billions level we are discussing on this list). The vast majority of my friends agree with that but I want to be sensitive to founders who want to keep it close to the vest. So, there are probably some companies that belong on this list but they have opted not to share valuation with the market. No judgment from me but then I don’t feel bad if you want to use this for recruiting or PR and can’t. Every decision has a trade-off.
Finally, if you think I missed one and should add it, respond to this or email me. I don’t claim to have perfect data and always want to keep the list updated.
That’s it. We’ll update this every month to reflect financings and announcements.
The reason I call it the “Company Edition” is because I’ll also be making a list of the most quantifiably influential people in PropTech. That should drop in the next few weeks and certainly before the end of the year. (I already have the list.)
